The models
Land Rover built its reputation on ladder chassis, low-ratio gearboxes and cars that went where nothing else could, and in 1997 it launched a car with none of those things. The Freelander was a monocoque with a transverse Rover engine, front-biased permanent four-wheel drive through a viscous coupling, and no low range at all; it was built at Solihull alongside the Defender and the Discovery, and it outsold both of them together. From 1998 to 2002 it was the best-selling four-wheel drive in Europe, and by the time production ended in 2006 some 540,000 had been built, more than any Land Rover before it.
Most of them are gone. The Freelander was a cheap used car for a decade, its head gaskets and viscous couplings finished off thousands, and the scrappage scheme took thousands more. The survivors, particularly the early cars and the three-door Softbacks, are now old enough and scarce enough to be collected, which is what this page is about: the car itself, the four engines, the bodies, the 2003 facelift, the faults that everyone knows, and what a good one is worth.
A Land Rover without a chassis
The Freelander began under Rover Group in the early 1990s as project CB40, a car to take Land Rover into the small four-wheel-drive market that the Suzuki Vitara and the Toyota RAV4 were creating. BMW bought Rover in 1994 and kept the project, and the car it launched at the Frankfurt show in September 1997 was unlike any Land Rover before: a unitary steel body, all-independent suspension with MacPherson struts, and a transverse engine driving all four wheels through a propshaft and a viscous coupling that sent torque rearward when the front wheels slipped. There was no transfer box and no low range. In their place Land Rover gave the car Hill Descent Control, which used the ABS to crawl it down a slope at walking pace, and electronic traction control, both firsts, and the combination worked far better than the purists expected.
The launch engines were Rover’s: the 1.8-litre K-series petrol with 117 bhp and the 2.0-litre L-series diesel with 96 bhp, each with a five-speed manual gearbox. Prices started well below a Discovery, the car was pleasant to drive on the road in a way no Land Rover had been, and it sold faster than Solihull could build it.

Softback, Hardback and the five-door
The Freelander came in two bodies that were really three. The five-door Station Wagon was the family car and the bulk of British sales, with twin sunroofs as standard on the better trims. The three-door came as the Softback, with a folding fabric roof over the rear and a drop-down tailgate window, and as the Hardback, with a removable hard top in its place; most three-doors left the factory as Softbacks and many have since been converted, and the hard top can be bought and fitted to either. A Commercial van on the three-door body, with no rear seats and panelled sides, served the fleets.
The three-door Softback is the Freelander the enthusiasts want. It is the body the Freelander 2 never offered, the one that made the original car look like a Land Rover rather than a hatchback, and, because its roof leaks and its rear window regulator fails, the one that has survived in the smallest numbers.

Four engines, and the one to have
The 2001 model year, launched in late 2000, brought two new engines from BMW’s parts bin and transformed the car. The Td4 was BMW’s 2.0-litre common-rail diesel with 110 bhp, smooth, economical and durable, and it replaced the L-series; the KV6 was Rover’s 2.5-litre V6 with 175 bhp, quick and refined but thirsty, and sold only with a five-speed automatic gearbox. The 1.8 K-series continued to the end, and so did its head gasket, which fails on most examples sooner or later and which Rover revised repeatedly; a car with the later multi-layer gasket and the revised oil rail fitted, with the receipt, is the one to buy.
The Td4 is the engine most surviving Freelanders have and the one to have: it carries a premium over the petrols, it is the cheapest to run, and its faults, the EGR valve and the occasional injector, are minor. The KV6 is the rarest and the best to drive, and the most expensive to keep. The L-series is slow, agricultural and nearly unbreakable.

The 2003 facelift and the end
The facelift for the 2004 model year, unveiled in 2003, gave the Freelander squared-off headlamps and tail lamps, new bumpers and grille, a revised dashboard and better seats, and a set of new trims: Sport, with its contrasting roof and alloys, and the Adventurer, Freestyle, Kalahari and Serengeti editions that followed. Under the skin the car was unchanged. Ford, which had bought Land Rover from BMW in 2000, kept the Freelander in production at Solihull until 2006, when the Halewood-built Freelander 2 replaced it, a different car on a Volvo-derived platform with a Haldex coupling and no three-door.

What it is like to drive and own
The Freelander drives like a tall Rover hatchback, which is to say better than any Land Rover of its day on the road and worse than all of them off it. The steering is light and accurate, the ride soft, the body roll considerable, and the refinement, on a Td4 or a KV6, good enough for long journeys. Off the road the viscous coupling and the electronics take it further than most owners will ever ask, and Hill Descent Control still impresses on a steep wet track. The three-door with the roof down is a different car again, and the reason the Softback has a following.
Ownership is a Rover-era proposition. Mechanical parts are cheap and plentiful, the owners’ forums are large and have solved every fault, and any competent garage can work on one; the expensive items are the four-wheel-drive system’s viscous coupling, intermediate reduction drive and rear differential, which fail together if the first is neglected, and the 1.8’s head gasket. Fuel economy is in the mid-twenties for the petrols and the high thirties for a Td4. Tax is by engine size on cars registered before March 2001 and by carbon dioxide after; the Td4 and the 1.8 sit in the middle bands. The petrols clear the London ULEZ where they meet Euro 4, which the later 1.8s and the KV6 do; the diesels do not.

Buying guide: what to look for
Three things first. On a 1.8, the head gasket: ask for the receipt, look for the later gasket and oil rail, check for mayonnaise under the oil cap and for coolant loss, and walk away from a car that has been “topped up” without explanation. On every Freelander, the viscous coupling: drive the car in tight circles at low speed on a dry surface, and if it judders or feels as if the brakes are on, the coupling has stiffened and the intermediate reduction drive and the rear differential are living on borrowed time. Then the rear differential itself, whose pinion bearings whine before they fail. A car with a replacement viscous coupling and a documented differential is worth the premium over one without.
After the running gear, water. The five-door’s twin sunroofs leak into the headlining and the footwells, the three-door’s Softback roof and drop-down rear window leak into the load bay, and the tailgate window regulator fails on both; damp carpets and a musty smell are the signs. Rust is arriving on the older cars at the rear arches, the sills and the rear subframe mounts, and the front subframe corrodes. Check the suspension bushes and the anti-roll bar links, the clutch slave cylinder, the electric windows, the heater blower and the air conditioning. Then the paperwork: a long history file, a low mileage and a single careful owner are worth more on a Freelander than on most classics, because so few survivors have any of the three.

Current value and where it sits
The Freelander 1 is at the bottom of its curve and starting up it. A running, tested car sells for £500 to £2,000, which makes it the cheapest four-wheel drive on this site; a good low-mileage Td4 or a 1.8 with its head gasket documented for £2,500 to £5,000; and the best early three-door Softbacks and the lowest-mileage late cars for £5,000 to £7,500, with the rare 50th Anniversary edition of 1998 and the KV6 Sport a little above. The three-door carries a premium over the five-door among the people who collect them, and the Td4 over the petrols among everyone.
Against the other Land Rovers the Freelander is the outlier: a tenth the price of a Defender and a fraction of a Range Rover Classic, and the only one that will cost less to buy than to insure. For the marque as a whole, see the Land Rover guide.

Buying checklist: the Freelander 1 in front of you
The four-wheel-drive system
- Drive tight circles slowly on dry tarmac: judder or a brakes-on feel means the viscous coupling has stiffened
- A stiff coupling takes the intermediate reduction drive and rear differential with it, so treat it as one repair
- Rear differential pinion bearings whine before they fail; listen on a trailing throttle
- A replacement coupling with a documented differential is worth the premium over a car with neither
Engine
- 1.8 K-series: ask for the receipt showing the later multi-layer gasket and revised oil rail
- Mayonnaise under the oil cap or unexplained coolant loss on a 1.8 is the answer, not a question
- Td4 is the one to have: cheapest to run, most durable, and its EGR valve and injectors are minor faults
- KV6 is the best to drive, the rarest, the thirstiest and the dearest to keep; automatic only
